The teaching of English at Knights Primary is designed to grow motivated, fluent and confident communicators as well as to to instill in children a love of writing, reading, speaking which are attributes that will improve their quality of life. Our English curriculum broadens pupils’ horizons and introduces them to a wide range of topics, themes and issues using a range of high-quality texts. This develops pupils’ understanding of their world – past, present and future. Teaching provides the skills all pupils need to develop a secure knowledge in literacy which enables a clear pathway of progression through the primary curriculum. We aim to expose children to a rich and varied range of vocabulary so that they can decipher new words and use them when speaking formally or informally. Over time, children will build significant cultural capital, become critical thinkers and develop judgement. We believe that secure literacy skills are crucial to a high-quality education and through this insight we give our pupils the cultural capital they need to become empowered members of society.
