Maths
Our aim at Knights Primary, is to ensure that all pupils are given the opportunity to develop their mathematical potential through a rich, engaging curriculum. We believe that every pupil can be a strong mathematician and that no child should be left behind. We aspire to develop lively, enquiring minds, encouraging pupils to use a range of methods to efficiently solve any problem. Our aim is to enable the pupils to become confident communicators who can articulate their understanding. We are certain that these skills will broaden their horizons and assist them to be successful in each phase of their education and beyond.
We want our children to ‘master’ their understanding of mathematics and be able to make links with different concepts to support their calculations. We teach our pupils to be able to build on their prior knowledge, which will enable them to solve problems in the present and to think confidently about mathematics in their future studies.
Alongside this, we strive to develop pupils’ mathematical language and their ability to select different mathematical approaches and strategies to solve problems and to be able to apply the necessary skills for computation and recording and to use them with understanding. Language forms a large part of this, and we aim to enhance their understanding and knowledge by ensuring exposure to rich and challenging vocabulary. Our pupils will therefore become empowered citizens in their communities, who can confidently use a range of skills to tackle any challenges they encounter.
