MFL

We live in a multicultural, interconnected world so learning a language enables our children to be active participants in our communities both at home and further afield. We strive to ensure children at Knights Primary are empowered citizens speaking to people in other languages with confidence.

We want children to gain enjoyment, pride and a sense of achievement; explore and apply strategies to improve their learning and explore their own cultural identities and those of others.

MFL plays an important role in underpinning children's capabilities in oracy, which is critical to becoming confident communicators. Our aim is to create enthusiastic learners and develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.

Learning a language builds up self-esteem, shapes children's ideas about the world they live in and gives them a new perspective on their own language. It leads to an awareness that language has a structure, and that this structure differs from one language to another.

Our children will go into the world feeling confident, empowered citizens acquired through the ability to speak an additional language with deep knowledge and understanding of that language.

Through our MFL teaching, we broaden children’s horizons and make them aware of themselves as global citizens. Learning the history of a language, applying that knowledge to practice and speak a language with peers and looking forward to applying that understanding in their travels in the future is what we strive to achieve.
