In Year 1, we build on the curiosity and love of learning children have developed in the Early Years and introduce them to the full range of National Curriculum subjects. 

Children will develop the key skills which help them unlock their potential and access learning with increased levels of independence and confidence. 

Mrs. Boakye is ably supported by the team of HLTAs and TAs who support the class. Mrs. Boakye is also the school and Trust leader for phonics and has a wealth of experience in this area. 

Reading lies at the heart of our Year 1 curriculum. Pupils are taught to read through daily systematic, synthetic phonics lessons. We follow the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. Read Write Inc. phonics starts in Early Years where pupils are taught individual sounds and learn to blend. In Year 1, the programme enables pupils to apply their blending skills to read decodable texts. Pupils are assessed half termly and grouped accordingly so they can progress through the programme at a suitably challenging pace. 

 We believe every child should master their understanding of mathematics. We use the White Rose Mastery resources to plan and deliver daily maths lessons. The approach ensures children build on prior knowledge to ensure a deeper conceptual understanding of maths is embedded. Children access their learning through concrete, pictorial and abstract representations and secure fluency in a range of skills which they can then apply in problem solving and reasoning tasks.
